Of the many titles showcased at the recent Capcom Spotlight, Onimusha: Way of the Sword stood out for its new overview trailer. Of course, a release date is still pending, but in a new tweet, director Satoru Nihei announced that the team is “working on the final stages of development.”
“Thank you all so much for all the positive comments you’ve shared for last week’s Capcom Spotlight. We’re glad to see so many of you say you can’t wait to know when the game will be released! The whole team is now working on the final stages of development. Please look forward to our next announcement!”
He also outlined the Underground Laboratory, nestled beneath Kyoto, where Dokyo, described as a “Formidable Foe,” was creating new Genma (the monsters that Musashi has to fight). “We’ve designed this stage with the feel of a traditional Japanese haunted house in mind. The shadows cast on the shoji screens look rather eerie, don’t they?”
While it may give off creepy vibes, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is far from a survival horror experience like Resident Evil. As the legendary Miyamoto Musashi, who returns to life after being bestowed with the Oni Gauntlet, players hack and slash their way through a Kyoto infested with Genma during the Edo period. He also must deal with his legendary rival, Sasaki Ganryu, who seemingly revels in the chaos of the times.
Combat relies on parries and breaking stances to execute weaker opponents. However, in keeping with previous Onimusha titles, Way of the Sword is not open-world, instead offering a 20-hour-long linear experience. It’s also a largely new story with no returning characters, though some elements that “pay homage” to its predecessors can be expected.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches later this year for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.
