After months of alleged gloom, especially following Xbox’s mass layoffs, The Coalition may have felt some relief in the positive critical response to Gears of War: E-Day. Currently available in advanced access, the prequel – praised for returning to the series’ roots while evolving the gameplay – has been a major factor in the Xbox exclusivity push. Speaking to Destin Legarie, creative director Matt Searcy said that the studio is “proud to be one of Xbox’s main titles.”
“Well, we feel great because Gears has such a long, storied… It’s part of Xbox’s DNA. It’s woven into it. At The Coalition, we feel pretty honored to have Gears and be the ones bringing that legacy forward. We know how much it means to people. We know how much it means to us.”
The exclusivity announcement, however, drew no shortage of controversy. Rumors circulated that E-Day would launch on day one for PC, but before Xbox’s showcase last June, reports emerged of a last-minute decision to make it exclusive. The Coalition denied these rumors, even as evidence emerged elsewhere. Regardless, this push for exclusivity is a long-term tactic for Xbox, with inXile’s Clockwork Revolution next up when it launches in 2027.
Gears of War: E-Day is available worldwide for all on October 6th for Xbox Series X/S and PC (alongside Game Pass). You can check out our review of the campaign, which we praised for its great storytelling, non-stop action and stellar setting.
As for post-launch, The Coalition has already confirmed additional content for Horde Siege and Versus, including seasonal updates and cosmetics. However, it may also consider bringing back classic features (like chainsaw dueling) and weapons based on fan feedback, though nothing is confirmed.
