Dispatch is Coming to Xbox Series X/S on July 29th

Developer AdHoc Studio has announced that its superhero narrative game, Dispatch, is making its way to Xbox Series X/S on July 29th. This would mark almost an entire year since the title was originally released on PC and PS5. It also made its way to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 earlier this year.

Dispatch will be a Play Anywhere title, which means that buying it through Microsoft’s Store will give you access to both the PC and the Xbox Series X/S versions. Along with this, the title also has the Handheld tag, indicating that it will run quite well on handheld systems running Windows 11.

The game takes place in a world where superheroes are quite common, and players take on the role of Robert Robertson III, who often moonlights as the crime-fighting Mecha Man. However, a mission goes horribly wrong, and Robertson is left without any of his Mecha Man equipment, leading to his decision to retire from crime fighting.

One evening, Roberston is approached by superhero Blonde Blazer, who recruits him at the Superhero Dispatch Network, tasking him with mentoring the Z-Team – a squad of former supervillains who are being rehabilitated into superheroes.

While much of Dispatch revolves around making quick dialogue choices, each one having its own consequences, it also features a management-style game mode where players have to send the Z-Team around the suburb of Torrance to fight crime and deal with any issues that might pop up. The system also involves paying attention to your team’s energy levels and making sure that they don’t get injured in the process.

Much of the story revolves around interpersonal drama at the Superhero Dispatch Network, all while Robert is also slowly using the company’s help to rebuild his Mecha Man suit, which would eventually allow him to get revenge on Shroud for not only destroying his previous suit but also for murdering Robertson’s predecessor, Mecha Man Astral.

The title is well-regarded for its high-quality writing and impressive cast of voice actors, which includes Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame playing the role of Robert. He is joined by Laura Bailey as Invisigal, Jeffrey Wright as fellow SDN worker Chase, Alanah Pierce as Malevola, Charles White as Sonar, and Sean McLoughlin as Punch Up.

Dispatch has seen quite a bit of success since its release, with the studio confirming back in January that it had gotten more than 3 million players in the months following its release. Since those figures didn’t account for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 releases of the game, however, it is quite likely that millions more players have spent some time with it since then.

In our review, we gave Dispatch a score of 9 out of 10, praising it for its Telltale-style take on episodic adventure games, compelling narrative choices, fun gameplay with a mix of mini-games and hero management systems, and excellent presentation. Our only complaints revolved around skill checks occasionally feeling quite random, and the final episode being quite divisive in how it wraps up the story.
