God of War Studio May Announce Another Title This Year – Rumor

As well-rounded as the latest State of Play was, there may be some disappointment from God of War fans expecting a brand new entry (spin-off notwithstanding). According to insider shinobi602, it’s apparently in the works and directed by Cory Barlog, and seemingly not that far away.

Responding to a user on ResetEra, who believed the next mainline title would launch “around 2028,” shinobi602 said, “Not that far (barring any delays of course).” Of course, the real question is: When will we hear about it?

This year, apparently. “Like I said, given the quarter they’re targeting, I do expect that,” responded the insider. “Probably May State of Play or the summer Keighley’s (SGF). As of now I don’t know yet. If not by then, then they’ve either pushed the release out further or doing a shorter reveal to release.” So there you have it. If plans remain on track, of course.

The last major entry in the series, God of War Ragnarök, released in 2022 to extensive acclaim, and it went on to sell over 15 million copies. However, Cory Barlog served as creative director on the project, meaning his last title in the director’s chair was in 2018 when the Norse saga began. Assuming this next God of War launches in 2027, that would make it nearly a decade since his last directorial stint.

In the meantime, fans can check out God of War Sons of Sparta, available now on PS5 and featuring a challenge mode with local co-op support (if you beat the story first). There’s also God of War Trilogy Remake, which is currently in “very early development” with no release date.
