There have been plenty of rumours going around about what we can expect from Sony’s next-generation console, commonly referred to as the PlayStation 6. A new report, courtesy of Insider Gaming, indicates that the company wants to further move to being digital-first by having the disc drive be detachable. According to the report, the new hardware will seemingly follow the footsteps of the PS5’s detachable disc drive from more recent models.
Insider Gaming states that, according to its sources, customers for the PS6 will have the choice to get just the console as a “digital only” option, or get one with the detachable disc drive included as a more traditional console options. Those who get the digital only option can also seemingly just get the disc drive separately if they wish to get the upgrade down the line. This decision, according to the report, is one Sony is “firm” on owing to the success seen by the PS5.
As for the disc drive itself being detachable, the decision also comes down to manufacturing and shipping costs, especially with modern “uncertain times”, which would indicate that the import tariffs imposed by the US might have played a key role in this decision by the company.
While Sony itself is yet to confirm any real details about its next-gen console, reports from as recently as late August have indicated that the home console will launch alongside a handheld one that will seemingly be able to dock in a fashion similar to what we see in Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2. According to this report, the handheld will get a considerable power boost when docked, likely owing to extra wattage as well as cooling in the docking hardware, to output games at a higher resolution.
The same report also claimed to have knowledge about hardware, indicating that the handheld will run on an AMD chip with 16 RDNA 5 compute units running at 1.20 GHz in handheld mode, and 1.65 GHz when docked. This information, according to the report, came from recent AMD documentation.
The PS6 handheld is also slated to be reasonably priced, according to the report, with indications that it will be more affordable than the upcoming Asus ROG Xbox Ally X. The lower pricing is likely enabled by Sony handling the R&D for the upcoming console in-house, rather than partnering with an external company like Asus, like how Microsoft did for the handhelds. The price for the handheld is expected to fall in at between $399 and $499. A PS6S is also slated to be coming out, with its price falling between $299 and $399. The full-fledged PS6 home console is expected to be priced at between $549 and $699.
The GPU powering the PS6 is also expected to be roughly equivalent in performance to AMD’s current-gen Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card, while also including support for features like Dense Geometry Format and Streaming Wave Coalescer, which allows for out-of-order execution of programs. In contrast, the next-gen Xbox console is expected to be powered by a chip that offers performance equivalent to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5080.
